Metro Start screen are live tiles, which display the latest information about certain apps that you wish to be updated on. Among the apps in the new Windows 8 Release Preview that can tap into this feature are Mail, People, Calendar, Photos, Weather, News, and Sports.
While these live tiles are very useful tools, it is good to know that this feature can be turned on and off. Which means you have the option to disable the feature to apps that you don’t need updates for.
For some apps, enabling the system is almost automatic. Just open the app and the live tile feature will be turned on automatically and you will start seeing the latest updates displayed in those two tiles.Meanwhile, some apps may require some setup. For example, you will need to set up at least one e-mail account to display a live tile for your e-mail. To activate the live tile for People, you need to add your accounts for social networks such as Facebook, Google and LinkedIn. To view the live tile for the Weather app, you have to specify your location or allow Windows to pick it up.
To set up accounts for Mail or People, open the app. Launch the Charms bar by holding down the Windows key on your keyboard and pressing C. Click the Settings charm and look for an option that says accounts. From there, you’ll be able to add your various accounts.
If you opt to not be updated on certain apps, simply right-click the tile and select the option to “turn live tile off” from the Apps bar below.

Thanks! I’ve noticed a lot of people had the same problem, I also had the same problem disabling this on my windows 8 machine at first…
